Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair Restoration At Aesthetic Dose

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has become a popular approach to hair restoration and growth. This is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss and works for both men and women. At Aesthetic Dose med spa in Boston, MA, we have helped many patients using this treatment.

PRP offers a promising solution for those who are experiencing thinning hair or receding hairlines. The main questions we are asked often is, how does  PRP  work, what’s the timeline for results, and the recommended frequency for treatments, and if there is any downtime?  We breakdown everything you need to know right here .

What Is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It’s a regenerative medicine technique that utilizes your own blood to promote healing and rejuvenation.

Here’s how it works:

  • Blood Collection: A small amount of your blood is drawn from your arm.
  • Centrifugation: The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which separates it into different layers: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.
  • PRP Preparation: The platelet-rich plasma is isolated and processed.
  • Injection: The PRP is injected into the scalp in areas affected by hair loss.

How Does PRP Work for Hair Restoration?

PRP contains growth factors and proteins that stimulate tissue repair. When injected into the scalp, it has several effects:

  • Stimulating Hair Follicles: PRP activates dormant hair follicles, encouraging them to regrow.
  • Prolonging Hair Growth Phase: It lengthens the anagen (active) phase of existing hair, slowing down hair loss.
  • Increasing Hair Density: PRP increases blood flow to hair follicles, promoting thicker, healthier hair strands.

Patients need to be aware that PRP only works in areas that still have some hair to stimulate. This will not work where complete baldness has taken place.

Results Timeline

The timeline for noticeable results varies, but here’s what you can expect:

  • 2 Weeks: Improvement in hair texture may already be visible.
  • 3 to 6 Months: Hair growth becomes noticeable, and existing hair thickens.
  • 6 to 12 Months: Peak results, with significantly increased hair density.

How Often Should PRP Be Done?

The frequency of PRP treatments depends on individual factors such as age, genetics, and the extent of hair loss. At Aesthetic Dose, we suggest that at least three PRP sessions spaced apart can provide optimal results. However, regular maintenance treatments may be necessary to sustain the effect. Most patients start with 3 to 6 initial treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months.

We create a customized plan for our patients, this will explain the frequency of maintenance doses and suggestions on how to optimize your treatment.

Downtime Associate With PRP

A great thing about PRP is that there is no downtime. At most we recommend not washing your hair with shampoo for a day or two and possibly avoiding strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours. Other than that, you can resume your normal routine right away.
